MATE Ceramics · Ericeira, Portugal
Marie always wanted to work with her hands. MATE ceramics are formed one at a time — cups, mugs, vessels meant to become quiet companions in daily life. She now works from a studio near Ericeira, Portugal.
MATE Ceramics grew out of a restlessness. Marie originally worked in communication design, spending her days in front of screens, shaping digital experiences for other people. Over time, she felt the urge to work with something she could actually hold in her hands – something slower, more intuitive, less perfect in the algorithmic sense. Clay became that counterweight. With MATE, she found a way to merge her design eye with the physical act of making.

What looks minimal at first glance is actually deeply considered. Some cups are glazed only on the inside, leaving the outside smooth but raw so you feel the clay with every sip. Others come in glossy neutrals, citrus tones or powder blues that quietly lift a kitchen shelf without screaming for attention. They’re designed as companions, not trophies – which is exactly where the name MATE comes from: part Marie Technau, part the idea that you’re taking home a small mate that makes your day. The philosophy behind the brand is simple and demanding at the same time: create functional objects that help people be more present in their everyday rituals. Instead of the forgettable white office mug that empties itself while you scroll, these pieces ask you to actually taste your tea, feel the warmth, notice the weight in your hand. Each cup carries the traces of the making process and then continues its story in someone else’s home.
